Fatty liver primarily correlates with Yakrit Roga (liver disorders), specifically resembling Yakritodara and Pleehodara under the broad classification of Udara Roga. Sthaulya and Udara are considered the manifestations most akin to fatty liver. Ayurveda views fatty liver through the lens of holistic body balance, with a unique conceptual framework relating to ancient principles of dosha, srotas (body channels), and dhatu (tissues).
Ayurvedic concepts on Fatty Liver
- Dosha imbalance
Fatty liver is mainly due to imbalance of kapha, pitta and meda. An increase in Meda Dhatu (fat tissue) and Srotorodha are key factors. In its vitiated state, Kapha leads to fat accumulation in places other than adipose tissue, raising lipid levels. The liver is the site of Pachaka Pitta, which controls metabolic activities and the transformation of food into nutrients. Pitta aggravation causes inflammation and liver tissue irritation Vitiated Vata results in Agnivikruti (deranged digestive fire).
- Agnimandya
The main cause of fatty liver in Ayurveda is Agnimandya (low digestive fire), which leads to incomplete digestion and the accumulation of Ama (morbid materials or toxins). This accumulation then obstructs bodily channels (Srotorodha).
-Srothas
The Rakthavaha srothas (channels carrying blood) and Yakruth (liver) as central in fatty liver pathogenesis. Their vitiation is often caused by a high-fat diet, sugary beverages, and a sedentary lifestyle.
