Tinnitus and Hearing Loss: Ayurvedic Treatment through Karna Purana and Nasya
Admin October 16, 2026

Tinnitus is the hearing of sounds (ringing, buzzing, hissing, roaring, humming, throbbing, or even music or singing) in the absence of external sound source. It may be present throughout the day or may come and go. Hearing loss is the condition were in which there is trouble in hearing sounds clearly. It ranges from mild difficulty in noisy environments to profound deafness. It can be unilateral, bilateral, with sudden or gradual onset.

Tinnitus and hearing loss are increasingly common auditory complaints that can affect communication, concentration, sleep, emotional well-being and overall quality of life.

Causes of Tinnitus and Hearing loss

- Sensoneural hearing loss

 1. Occupational hearing loss( noise induced)

 2. Minereres disease

 3. Age related cochlear degeneration.

 4. Acoustic neuroma

 5. Ear infections

- Conductive hearing loss

 1. Ear wax build-up

 2. Otitis media

 3. Tympanic membrane perforation

Along with that stress anxiety certain medication and conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders or multiple sclerosis may also lead to tinnitus or hearing loss.

Symptoms of hearing loss and tinnitus

Tinnitus:

- Ringing, buzzing, whooshing, humming, hissing sounds

- Sound in one or both ears

- In severe cases, trouble hearing, working, or sleeping

Hearing loss:

- Difficulty in hearing, especially in noisy places

- Ask others to repeat what they are talking

- High volume in listening music or television

- High pitch voice

- Difficulty in hearing while using phone

Ayurveda correlates the symptoms with Karnanada, and Badhirya. Karnanada is the condition where in which perception of sound without any source. Badhirya is the condition with sudden or gradual loss of power of hearing.

Both primarily attributed to vitiated Vata dosha affecting the auditory channels (Srotas). The therapeutic objective is consequently not merely to suppress the perceived sound but to address the underlying imbalance through Vata-shamana, snehana, nourishment and appropriate local therapies. The therapies for these conditions are Karna Purana (medicated ear oleation) and Nasya (nasal administration of medicines), often combined with internal medications, diet, and lifestyle modifications.

Sreedhareeyam aims an integrative approach in treating Tinnitus and hearing loss. It includes, Shodhana Chikitsa which includes, Virechana, and Nasya. Shaman therapies like Shirodhara, Shiro Abhyanga, Karna Dhupana, Karna Purana etc. along with internal medications. Diet and lifestyle plays a prime role in the conditions.

Avoid: Excessive noise exposure, headphones, cold foods, caffeine, and Vata-aggravating factors (irregular meals, late nights)

Include ghee and warm foods in the diet. Stress relieving and reducing practices also help in providing auditory health. Maintain regular sleep and meal schedule. Maintain adequate hydration.

Ayurvedic Treatment through Karna Purana and Nasya

Ayurvedic Treatment through Karna Purana and Nasya

Karna Purana:

Karna Purana is a traditional Ayurvedic procedure in which appropriately selected medicated oil or other prescribed preparation is introduced into the external auditory canal under controlled clinical conditions.

- The therapy is traditionally intended to provide local Snehana and Vata-pacifying effects.

- It also act as Srothoshodhana help to clears and nourishes the auditory channels.

- Karna Purana help in local nourishment through direct trophic support to auditory neve endings.

Depending on the clinical presentation, different oils may be selected by an Ayurvedic physician.

The rationale is particularly relevant in conditions where dryness, discomfort, stiffness or Vata-associated symptoms are prominent. However, Karna Purana should not be regarded as a treatment that can reverse every type of sensorineural hearing loss.

Nasya karma:

Nasya Karma is an Ayurvedic therapeutic procedure involving administration of an appropriately selected medicated preparation through the nasal route.

Ayurveda considers the nose an important route for therapeutic influence over structures of the head and the medicines administered through the nose reach the channels and is useful when tinnitus is associated with sinus congestion, cervical spondylosis, or Vata connecting to the ears via the Eustachian tubes and cranial nerves. It is especially aggravation in the head and neck region. Nasya is therefore incorporated into the management of several disorders involving the head, neck and sensory organs.

Nasya is considered as the choice when Vata-imbalance and disorders involving the head and sensory functions are prominent.

Ayurvedic therapies such as Karna Purana and Nasya may be explored as complementary approaches for symptom management and functional support, but there is currently insufficient high-quality evidence to claim that they can universally reverse established sensorineural hearing loss.

The possibility of improvement depends greatly on the underlying cause. Conductive hearing loss caused by potentially reversible problems should be evaluated and treated appropriately. In established sensorineural hearing loss, the priority is accurate diagnosis, prevention of further damage and appropriate rehabilitation.

The most appropriate role for these therapies today is therefore within individualized, supervised and integrative care, supported by proper ENT evaluation and audiological testing.

For a patient experiencing tinnitus or hearing loss, the goal should not simply be to make the sound disappear. It should be to identify the cause, protect remaining hearing, reduce distress, improve function and enhance quality of life—while using Ayurvedic therapies judiciously where clinically appropriate.
