Ayurvedic Treatment for Autoimmune Diseases

Ayurvedic Treatment for Autoimmune Diseases
Admin September 19, 2026

An autoimmune disease is a breakdown in homeostasis of the immune system. These conditions occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, leading to chronic inflammation and, in many cases,it may progress to organ damage. It is not a single condition but an entire category of disorders, and they affect far more people than is commonly recognised.

Causes Autoimmune Disease

The cause is unknown. But, a single factor is not responsible for Autoimmune disorders

Genetic Factors: Certain genes are highly susceptible for autoimmune disorders.

Environmental triggers: In genetically susceptible patients certain environmental conditions (cold, hot, bacteria, viral infections, stress, hormonal changes etc.) may trigger the disease.

Autoimmune diseases are difficult to diagnose due to variable vague symptoms which may mimic like other conditions. There is no single test for most of the autoimmune diseases. So obtaining a detailed history and comprehensive physical examinations with appropriate blood investigations and imaging are inevitable to rule out possibilities and diagnose the condition.

Ayurveda classifies and understands these diseases as disturbances in Dosha, Agni, Ama, Srothas and Ojas. The weakened Agni (digestion) leads to the formation of Ama(toxins). When Ama combines with aggravated Doshas, it circulates throughout the body and accumulates in vulnerable (Srotas) tissues, triggering inflammation, pain, stiffness, fatigue, and organ dysfunction. Over time, this process weakens Ojas (Immune system), reducing the body's ability to maintain balance and health.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Autoimmune Diseases

Ayurvedic Treatment for Autoimmune Diseases

Rather than symptomatic relief Ayurveda aims to regulate and strengthen the immune system and restore metabolic failure. Sreedhareeyam Treatment principle includes Agnideepana (kindling the digestive fire), Amapacana (clearing ama), Pacifying doshas, opening up channels ( Srotorodha) and improving Ojas. These objectives are achieved through an individualized plan combining Shodhana (purificatory therapies), Shamana (palliative and immunomodulatory herbs), Rasayana (rejuvenation), and holistic lifestyle changes.

Shodhana Chikitsa (Purificatory treatments)

Shodhana therapies aim to remove accumulated Doshas and Ama from the body, addressing the root cause. It includes Panchakarma procedures like Vamana, Virechana, Vasti, Nasya and Rakthamokshana according to the patient's conditions.

Shamana Chikitsa (Palliative Treatments)

Medicines to improve Agni (Deepana), to eliminate toxins (Ama pachana),  eliminate morbid doshas from channels (Srothoshodhana), medications aiming symptomatic relief, anti inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.
