Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital & Research Centre Pvt Ltd’ is the flagship entity of the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Group. The Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Group is based out of Koothattukulam town of Ernakulam District in Kerala. This group is owned by the Nelliakattu family. The Nelliakattu family is one of the oldest households in the region and is a family of Ayurvedic Practitioners, since generations. Though the family has been in existence for more than 400 years, the recent history can be traced back to 1931 when the ancestors in the family had an ayurvedic clinic and raw drugs store in the Koothattukulam town, by the name of Sreedhari.
The present day Sreedhareeyam came into being on the Vijayadashami day of 1999, when the hospital was set up as an eight bedded facility for In-Patient eye treatment.
The setting up of the IP facility was a natural extension of the existing OP facilities and it was brought about by the effectiveness of the medicines and the positive results experienced by the patients. The visionaries behind setting up of the hospital were Shri. NP Narayanan Namboothiri, the present Chairman and his younger brother Late Dr. NPP Namboothiri.
Today, Sreedhareeyam Hospital has grown to become a 342 bedded NABH accredited and ISO certified Ayurvedic Hospital which specialises in Ayurvedic Eye Care and General Treatments. Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala, has awarded the hospital with ‘Ayur Diamond’ certification.
The hospital specialises in management of conditions such as Retinitis Pigmentosa, Glaucoma, Keratoconus, Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration, Optic Neuropathy etc. Since the hospital has, traditionally, maintained a low profile and focussed only on the well-being of the patients, most of the patients have been approaching only as the last resort and after having exhausted all other medical options. The same applies to general treatments. The hospital has a separate wing for the same, ‘Department of Panchakarma’. Even complex treatments like Jalaukavacharana (Leech Therapy) are available.
